Marc Thorman - Composer, Pianist, Educator


Marc Thorman is a composer, pianist, and music educator at the City University of New York. His compositions encompass works for voice and orchestral instruments, electronic media, and spoken word.
As a performer, Thorman has showcased his talents as a vocalist and keyboardist in cities like New York, London, and Boston. His works have been featured at notable events such as Spectrum, iBeam The Howl! Festival, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Electro-Acoustic Music Festival in Brooklyn, and the Brooklyn College Library Cultural Program.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Thorman led a rock band whose songs were recorded on independent albums and single releases. As a music educator, Professor Thorman studied composition under renowned figures like Charles Dodge, David del Tredici, and Morton Feldman. He received a scholarship at the MIT Experimental Music Studio and earned the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the City University of New York for his doctoral thesis on John Cage’s speech compositions. His article on “John Cage’s ‘Letters to Erik Satie’” was published in American Music.
